Hello!
The song I'm posting today is one that I found fairly recently. I remember the first time I heard it, I was instantly taken in by the deep beat and haunting lyrics and became obsessed.
The song is "Is There Somewhere" by Halsey. The story of this song is two people who shouldn't be together but can't seem to stay away from each other. They are constantly asking the other; "is there somewhere you can meet me?"
And every time they are together they seem to forget why they shouldn't be together.
Lyrics are always critical for me and these lyrics are especially powerful and have stuck with me ever since I first heard them. The lyrics still stick in my gut no matter how many times I've listened to the song.
We have all had experiences where we have fallen for someone we shouldn't have and it is all the more painful when they seem to return the feelings but it still can't happen for one reason or another. We promise ourselves that we won't fall for them, that we'll be careful and everything will work out because all that matters is that they genuinely care for you too.
We try to resist but we know that when they ask "is there somewhere you can meet me?" that you will go and forget why you shouldn't be together.
Then later, there is the heartbreak when "I try to refrain, but you're stuck in my brain. And all I do is cry and complain, cause second's not the same." It's nearly impossible to forget this person that you are falling in love with no matter how hard you try not to.
This song is so important to me because there is nothing calculated or artificial about Halsey's portrayal of this kind of heartbreak. It is raw and genuine and makes you feel something because there is that real emotion behind it that inspired this song.
"You were dancing in your tube socks in our hotel room,
flashing those eyes like highway signs.
Light one up and hand it over, rest your head upon my shoulder.
Just wanna feel your lips against my skin.
White sheets, bright lights, crooked teeth, and the night life.
You told me this is right where it begins.
But your lips hang heavy underneath me.
And I promised myself I wouldn't let you complete me.
I'm trying not to let it show, that I don't wanna let this go.
Is there somewhere you can meet me?
Cause I clutched your arms like stairway railings.
And you clutched my brain and eased me ailing.
You're writing lines about me, romantic poetry.
Your girl's got red in her cheeks cause we're something she can't see.
And I try to refrain, but you're stuck in my brain.
All I do is cry and complain cause second's not the same.
I'm sorry but I fell in love tonight.
I didn't mean to fall in love tonight.
You're looking like you fell in love tonight.
Could we pretend that we're in love?"
