(Okay this blog may have a lot of John Mayer posts but he's one of my favorite artists and it's not my fault that he is incredibly talented and writes beautiful music)
Alright here we go.
Today's song is "My Stupid Mouth" by John Mayer. This is not one of his more popular songs and that's a shame because it is one of my favorites and gives me comfort to know that John Mayer too, finds himself in awkward situations that are nearly impossible to recover from.
This song is the "my stupid mouth has got me in trouble. I said too much again to a date over dinner yesterday" song. In which John has once again put his foot in his mouth and chalked up another social casualty on his list of achievements.
The classic; oh God, I said that and now she hates me and I can't recover. My mother taught me better than this. Why don't I have a filter?
"I'm never speaking up again, it only hurts me. I'd rather be a mystery than she desert me"
But then he points out the universal truth that every human has faced multiple times:
"Why is it my fault? So maybe I try too hard, but it's all because of this desire; I just wanna be liked, just wanna be funny. Looks like the joke's on me. So call me 'Captain Backfire.'"
Everyone craves acceptance, it's part of human nature and when we put ourselves out there and it backfires, we just want to crawl into a cave and hibernate til the end of forever. At least, that's how I feel when I'm faced with socially awkward situations.
So here is the anthem for those of us who are plagued with social anxiety and constantly find ourselves cursing our stupid mouths.
